Dr. Paz L. Miranda

PAZ L. MIRANDA M.D., - 81, of Hammonton suddenly passed away Wednesday March 14, 2018 in her native country of the Philippines.  Paz was born July 14, 1936 in Mayantoc, Tarlac a small town outside the city of Manila.  She was a consistent honors student in her youth and graduated valedictorian from the Bukidon Provincial High School.  She started at University of Philippines then later received her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1960 from the University of Santo Tomas (UST).
She moved to the United States and took up residency at Newark City Hospital in Internal Medicine where she met her life partner, Dr. Apolinario Miranda.  After marrying in December of 1963, they moved to the US Virgin Islands to obtain immigrant visas where they both were public health physicians for 3 years.  They moved back to New Jersey where she worked as a staff physician at Ancora Psychiatric Hospital.  She continued her residency in Internal Medicine at Atlantic City Hospital where she finished her Internal Medicine specialty.  She then accepted a position as a staff physician at the Vineland State School Developmental Center, treating the physically and mentally handicapped.  She became chief of in-patient physicians and later deputy medical director.  She finished her career there and retired in 1998. 
Along with being a dedicated physician, she was a devoted wife, mother and "Lola" to her 6 grandchildren.  She balanced her career and family life but family was always her priority.  She loved spending time with family and friends at her home on the Great Egg Harbor River in Mays Landing where she moved after retirement. There, she would host weekly mahjong gatherings and dinners with friends.  She was an accomplished pianist and loved performing at local recitals.  She also enjoyed weekly jaunts to the casinos with her husband.   Besides visiting the Philippines annually, she loved travelling around the world. 
She was active in various organizations including Treasurer of Association of Philippine Physicians in America (APPA) 1999-2001; President of Philippine American Medical Society of NJ (PAMSNJ) 2005-2006; Treasurer for UST Medical Association of tri-state area 1991-1996; Chairman - Foundation, PAMSNJ 2006-2007; Board of Governor - APPA 2002-2003; Treasurer - PAMSNJ 1993-1997.  She also was named Mother of the Year of 2000 by the Filipino American Association and Mrs. APPA in 2009.  She was a devout Catholic and an active parishioner at St. Vincent DePaul in Mays Landing volunteering in local church organizations. 
Paz is predeceased by her parents Vicente and Feliza Lumibao and her brother Nestor.   She will be lovingly remembered by her family which includes her husband Apolinario, her five children Michael (Maria Elena), Mark (Chona), Pol (Ronnie), Joyce and Philip (Cari) and 6 grandchildren Phaedra, Fiona, Isabella, Roland, Kannon and Elle.   She is also survived by her sister, Aida Pineda.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for memorial contributions made payable to the Santiago Institute, a high school in the Philippines where she was a board member, and sent to Apolinario Miranda, 905 Morris Lane, Mays Landing, NJ 08330 for an auditorium stage to be named on her behalf.
Visitation will be on April 14th at 9:30am at St. Vincent De Paul Church 5021 Harding Highway Mays Landing, NJ, followed by an 11am Memorial Mass.
