Gregory Joseph Gasiewski, Sr., aged 67, of Tabernacle, NJ, passed away with loved ones by his side at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, on February 9, 2017.
Born February 2, 1950 to Joseph and Evelyn Gasiewski in Staten Island, New York and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey. Greg attended St. Nicholas Grammar School, Marist High School and graduated from St. Peter's College in Jersey City, New Jersey. Upon graduation he began his long career in the shipping industry. Greg married Catherine Cranwell of Union City, NJ and together they raised their four children, Tara, Michele, Gregory Jr. and Kerry. Greg and Cathy celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary on October 10, 2016.
In 1990, Greg had an opportunity to advance his career in the shipping industry in New Orleans, so he and his wife Catherine moved their family to Slidell, Louisiana. No one could fully describe Greg's feelings about raising his family in Slidell. The eight years spent there were filled with many fond memories and one could always sense the fullness of his heart when Greg talked about Louisiana. While Greg worked two jobs supporting his family for most of his early career, his role as father was always his greatest source of pride and joy, and the move to Louisiana afforded him the time to focus more on his children. Greg enjoyed chaperoning school field trips, attending sporting events and taking his children to Mardi Gras parades each year. In 1998, Greg, Cathy, Greg Jr. and Kerry moved to Tabernacle, NJ, while Tara and Michele attended college. Greg and Cathy have called Tabernacle home for over 17 years now.
Greg was predeceased by his father, Joseph Gasiewski and his mother, Evelyn Gasiewski and mother-in-law, Catherine M. Cranwell. Greg is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Gasiewski, and their children, Tara Hauk (Jeffrey) of Davidson, NC, Michele Gasiewski (Leon Tuitt) of Charlotte, NC, Gregory Gasiewski Jr. of Chicago, IL and Kerry Echavarria (José Luis) of Hammonton, NJ. Greg will be remembered by his brother, Robert Gasson of Bayonne, NJ, who he loved dearly and for his love and service to his family and his kind and witty nature. Greg was known by many as "the salt of the earth," a good, simple person, with a kind and loving heart. He loved and was loved by his two nieces Caitlin Altobelli (Anthony) and Laura Cranwell, as well as his four grandchildren, Kyle, Sade, Luke and Gage.
Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing at the Marinella Funeral Home 102 N 3rd St, Hammonton, NJ, 8:30am-10:30am on Monday, the 13th of February followed by an 11:00 am Mass at St Mary of Mt. Carmel Parish St Joseph Church.
