Althea (Syd) B. Vaughn, formerly of Hammonton, NJ and Stuart, FL passed away August 8, 2023, one month shy of her 99th birthday.
She was born and raised in Glenview, Illinois and attended Northfield High School. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Helen and Edward Saunders, her sister, Emily McHenry, grandson, Daniel Taraschke, son-in-law, Duke Taraschke and her beloved husband, John W. Vaughn. She is survived by her three daughters, Charlotte Taraschke, Donna Artz (Alan Artz) and Deborah Vaughn Wright (Scott Wright) as well as five grandchildren, John Taraschke (Chris), Mary Jo Spack, Michael Taraschke, Amy Hulslander ( Michael), Matthew Taraschke (Aruna) and 7 great grandchildren.
Following her marriage to John Vaughn, whom she met while working at the Glenview Naval Air Station, she became a very active Navy wife. During John’s naval career they lived in Elizabeth City, NC; Hammonton, NJ; Quonset Point, R.I.; Oxford, MS; Milton, FL; Coronado, CA; Jacksonville, FL; and Toms River, NJ. As a Naval Officer’s wife and mother she was very involved in her children’s activities and the Officer Wives Clubs. She was very efficient during all of their moves having the household settled in short order. There is a family saying if any item was misplaced “we will find it during the next move”. Althea loved her family and was always doing special things for her girls. She loved to sew, needlepoint, ceramics and other crafts to make the home and holidays special. Althea was a Red Cross Gray Lady volunteering at local hospitals wherever they lived and at Red Cross blood drives.
Following retirement Althea and John settled in Hammonton, NJ where she became involved in the Presbyterian Church of Hammonton and the Eastern Star. Later, Althea and John began splitting their time between Hammonton and Stuart, FL. While in Stuart, she enjoyed teaching water aerobics at their condominium pool for friends, planning social events and attending the Peace Presbyterian Church of Stuart. Althea loved to travel the USA visiting historical and natural parks.
Althea will be remembered by her quick wit, love of family and friends, her beauty and her spirit.
She will be interred next to John at the Greenmount Cemetery, Hammonton, NJ. A private celebration of life will be held in the future for family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the American Red Cross www.redcross.org/donate/donation
