Clarence J. Mattioli

February 1, 1923 — July 29, 2013

Clarence Joseph Mattioli, age 90 of Ocean City, New Jersey, joined his wife, Gilda Mattioli in God's loving arms on July 29, 2013. Clarence was born on February 1, 1923 in Landisville, New Jersey. He is a graduate of Hammonton High School, La Salle University and Dickinson Law School. He married his beloved wife, Gilda Greco at the age of 22, and together, they had 7 children, and spent 36 wonderful years together. An attorney-at-law since 1948, he clerked in his early years in Camden. Later, he began his law practice in Hammonton in the First Federal building on Bellevue Avenue. In 1964, Clarence purchased what was then the old Hammonton News building on South 2nd St., converting the dwelling into several business offices. He maintained his law practice at that location in excess of 50 years, serving the legal community with the utmost honor and dedication, maintaining his membership in both the Atlantic County and Camden County Bar Associations. His sense of hard work and determination was instilled in him by his father, Eli Mattioli, who maintained the family bakery with his brothers in Landisville, known as Mattioli Brothers Bakery. An amputee as a result of an auto accident at the age of 10, he never allowed the tragic event to serve as an impediment to attaining tremendous success in the legal field and in the business community. Despite his handicap, he played high school football for Hammonton High and was an avid hunter- earning himself the nickname of "Dead-Eye Mattioli." In his later years, he enjoyed sitting on the porch of his bayside home in Ocean City and enjoying his view of the lagoon with his loving companion, Romaine Palermo. His great joy was to entertain friends at his home for "Nights in Venice." He enjoyed people, and his circle of friends included folks from all walks of life. He would often say "...it's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice." Clarence's charismatic personality will be greatly missed. Clarence is predeceased by his wife, Gilda, and his son, Vincent J. Mattioli. He is survived by his loving companion Romaine Palermo; son Eli R. Mattioli (wife Elaine); son and law partner Clarence J. Mattioli, Jr. (wife Lisa); daughter Carol Hoffman (husband Robert); daughter Annamae Jacobs (husband Frank); daughter Lisa Sacchi (husband Robert); daughter Grace Mattioli (husband James). He will be especially missed by his loving grandchildren; Michael, Julia, Ashley, Rebecca, Emily, Matthew, Maria, Christopher and Elizabeth. He will also be missed by his loving nieces, nephews and cousins who adore him immensely. Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing Thursday from 7:00pm - 9:00pm and Friday after 10:30am at the Marinella Funeral Home 102 N. 3rd St. Hammonton, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday 12:00pm at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Parish - St.Joseph Church 3rd & French Streets Hammonton, NJ. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery 124 S. First Rd. Hammonton, NJ. Donations may be made to CHOP Foundation Lock Box # 1352 P.O. Box 8500 Phila. PA 19178.
