Betty was the daughter of George Richard Smith and Helena Viereck Mitchell Smith, the third of six siblings. She graduated from Hammonton High School in 1942. She met her husband, Edwin Rowe when she was out to lunch with a friend and he challenged her to a game of darts. They married September 19, 1953. They built a house in Folsom in 1957 and Betty lived there for 65 years. They had three children Elizabeth (Karl) Parker, Edwin Trevor Rowe and Jean (Jim) Miller. Betty out-lived her husband, her son and all of her siblings. Her survivors include her daughters, her grandchildren, Trevor Parker and Hope (Jason) Zagaria and her great-granddaughter Rowe Zagaria.
Betty realized her life-long dream of becoming a teacher later in her life. She graduated from Glassboro State College in 1975 and taught in the Elwood School district until her retirement. After retirement, Betty enjoyed traveling. She and Ed traveled around the US with a camper and also traveled to Germany. Together they were active in the Our Lady of the Assumption Society.
Betty was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church in Folsom for all the time she lived there. Over the years she filled a variety of leadership positions, served on the altar guild and helped with many activities.
Betty was very outgoing and loved being with people. She would take a train trip to upstate NY and know the names and life stories of the people she met on the train by the time she reached her destination. And they would know all about her children and grandchildren.
