Erma C. Tidwell

Erma C. Tidwell, age 87 of Hammonton, NJ passed away Thursday, May 23, 2024 at home with her beloved family by her side. Erma fought a heroic battle with cancer over three years.

Erma was born in Hammonton and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1954. She attended St. Agnes School of Nursing from 1954-1957. While raising her family and working, Erma furthered her education and received her Associate’s degree in 1985. Early in her career she worked the 11pm to 7am shift at the Esposito Maternity Home from 1965 – 1971. From there Erma went to Virtua in Voorhees where she retired in January 2001 after 30 years of service. She came out of retirement and did 8 more years at the Endo Center in Voorhees.

Erma is predeceased by her parents Anna and Angelo Fortis, her beloved husband George, her brother Nicholas Fortis, her Godchild Michele Samanic and her other niece Karen Marker. She was an active member of St. Joseph Church and past member of the Altar Rosary Society. When her three sons attended St Joseph High School she was an active PTA mom who attended all school events along with volunteering at the Little League. Erma was the kind of person who was always available for her family and friends. If someone was in the hospital she was there to take care of them. If you had a question about a condition or medication, you asked Erma.

She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. George, Michael (Julie), Brian (Carol), her brother John Fortis (Bea) and her sister in law, Margie Fortis. Her 3 Grandsons, Drew, Brett, and Garrett were the sunshine of her life. She will be sadly missed by her friends and family. We will try to keep the Tortellini Tradition alive.

A heartfelt thanks to all of Erma’s beautiful friends, especially Kathy Reichert, her neighbors Van and Catherine, her sister in law Margie Fortis and her wonderful caretaker Marie.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing Tuesday May 28, 2024 from 8:30am – 10:30am at the Marinella Funeral Home 102 N. Third St. Hammonton, NJ 08037. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11am at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Parish St. Joseph Church 3rd & French Streets Hammonton, NJ. Burial will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 248 S. First Rd. Hammonton, NJ.
