Joseph E. Berenato, Sr., 83, of Hammonton passed away Monday, March 12, 2018 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after a brief but valiantly fought illness. Joe was born on November 30th, 1934 to Joseph and Emma (Hummel) Berenato in Hammonton, New Jersey, the youngest of three children. He graduated from Hammonton High School in 1952 and earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1956. Joe met his love, Henrietta, mother of his four children in 1958 and they corresponded during the time of his enlistment in the United States Army. He served at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, and was then transferred to USAR Hq II U.S. Army Corps in Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. They married on May 20th, 1960. Joe was an accomplished Mechanical Engineer working in the supermarket industry, having worked for Pantry Pride, Superfresh and Giant Foods. Later in his career he moved into sales where his contacts and "little blue book" were very sought after. Joe was a good, loyal friend to many and was always willing to help someone out or give someone a ride. He was also very active with not only his high school alumni but also his college fraternity brothers in the Alpha Phi Delta fraternity. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years. The life of the party, Joe was an excellent dancer. He was also a proud member of the McDonald's breakfast crew and the Maplewood lunch club. Joe is survived by his loving fiancé Beverly Wechsler; children Annette (Jim) Posey of Cape Coral, FL, Regina (Girard, Jr.) Tell of Hammonton; Joseph, Jr. (Deborah) of Bear, DE; grandchildren Bobby (Jamie) LaManna, Daniel and Shannon Pittman, Girard and Sean (Victoria) Tell, Sarah and Emily Berenato and great grandchildren, Zooey, Kenley and Tiana; Beverly's children, Jay Onasch, Brett (Lana), and Erin (Blake) Smith, and grandchildren Ryland, Lilah, Scarlitt and Noah; special nieces Patricia Cafone and Brenda (Mike) DiVirgilio, other nieces and nephews, and many friends, including lifelong close friends, Joe and RoseAnn Lucca and Ann Llewelyn. Joe was predeceased by his parents, his wife, his sisters Anna Ebinger and Marie Dickinson and his beloved son Charles. Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing Friday March 16, 2018 from 8:30 - 10:30am at the Marinella Funeral Home 102 N. 3rd. St. Hammonton, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11:00am St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Parish - St. Anthony of Padua Church 285 Rt. 206 Hammonton, NJ. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery 124 S. First Rd. Hammonton, NJ. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe's name to the Wounded Warriors Project P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517.
