Marie R. Rice

Marie Rice (nee Ranere) of Hammonton passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 14, 2012 after a long illness.
She was born and raised in Hammonton and lived most of her life in her hometown. She graduated from Hammonton High School in 1936 and in 1940 graduated from Temple University with a B.S. degree in elementary education.
Marie began her teaching career in the Runnemede school system but soon married Anthony Rice and spent the next two and a half years by his side as he moved from base to base as an army air force pilot during World War II.
In 1946 they returned to Hammonton and Marie began her twenty four year kindergarten teaching career with Hammonton Public Schools.
Marie was a loving and attentive mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She had a great inner strength as well as beauty. She loved to travel and was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit many parts of this country and also abroad. Her greatest passions were her family, her home, teaching little children and caring for animals in need. She also loved to cook and prepared many traditional Italian meals especially Christmas Eve dinner for her family.
Marie will be deeply missed and always remembered by her family and friends. She is survived by her loving daughters, Marcia Chew, Melanie Rice, her caring grandchildren, Arthur (Rory) Chew, Dr. Jason (Suzanne) Chew, her precious great grandchildren Arthur (A.J), Owen, Garrett, Kaia and Cove, devoted sisters Anna Capella, Helen Gay, many nieces and nephews and also her many compassionate friends who were faithful until the end.
A very special thank you goes to Marie's caregivers from The Heritage Assisted Living, Synergy Home Care, Hospice of New Jersey and especially to Jeanne Chiaradio and Barbara Primavera for all of their assistance. Their unwavering devotion and compassionate care to Marie gave our family peace of mind through these past months.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Marie's life on Thursday, October 18th at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Parish; St. Martin de Porres R.C. Church, 129 Park Avenue in Hammonton. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. She will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery in Mays Landing. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Human Society of Ocean City, PO Box 1254, Ocean City, NJ 0822.
