Richard E. 'Dick' Mitchell

June 29, 1932 — August 23, 2015

Richard E. Mitchell passed away peacefully at home on August 23, 2015. Son of Thomas Mitchell and Francis Hull Mitchell, he was born June 29, 1932 and he grew up in Philadelphia, PA. He was a resident of Hammonton, NJ where he lived for the last 56 years. Richard was a 1950 graduate of Southern High School, Philadelphia, PA. After graduating high school Richard served four years as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. During his tour of active duty he received the good conduct medal and medals for National Defense and Korean Defense. Following his honorable discharge from the military, Richard attended both LaSalle University and Temple University. He earned an Associate Degree in electrical engineering from Temple University. Richard was a technical writer and employed by RCA. He owned Mitchell Associates, a technical writing consulting business, for many years. In 1990 he went to work for Lockheed Martin in Moorestown from which he retired in 1996. Richard was a man of uncommon character, integrity and substance. He transformed many lives through quiet acts of generosity for which he never sought recognition or publicity. Richard was a committed volunteer throughout his life. In the past, he was an active volunteer for the Jaycees in Hammonton and volunteered in a number of capacities for St. Mark's Church for more than 30 years. More recently, Richard served on the Hammonton Zoning Board of Adjustment and the Board of Directors for the Oak Grove Cemetery. He also volunteered with the American Red Cross and helped to restore the AJ Meerwald, a 115' historic schooner docked in NJ. Richard was a proud veteran who spent countless hours volunteering for the Hammonton VFW Post 1026, as well as the American Legion 186 and the Disabled American Veterans. He was honored as Veteran of the Month by the American Legion in 2003. More than anything else, Richard was dedicated to his family. He was a devoted husband to Annabel, his wife of 56 years. He was a deeply caring father to his three children and a playful and kind grandfather to his five grandchildren. Richard was a proud patriarch who was greatly loved, admired and respected by his family. Survivors include his wife Annabel (Scaffidi), his daughters Janice Mitchell Mintz (Robert) and Judith Mitchell Bowley (George), his grandchildren Daniel, Elizabeth and Cameron Mintz and Jacob and Steven Bowley, and his sister Carolyn Shaffer. He was predeceased by his son David and his brother Donald.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Thursday from 9:30 am until 11:00 am at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Parish - St. Joseph Church 3rd & French Streets Hammonton, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at11:00am. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements entrusted to the Marinella Funeral Home 102 N. 3rd St. Hammonton, NJ. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hammonton V.F.W. Passalaqua Post # 1026 300 S. Egg Harbor Rd. Hammonton, NJ 08037.
